Washington Going Green

The Town of Washington along with some Louisiana Technical College Students are taking the leap and going green.

Kerri Joseph is one of two students who will be participating in the National Sustainability Competition thanks to a land donation in the town of Washington that would allow her and her team to place an energy creating windmill on site.

It's a process of completely self powering the community where they would no longer be hooked to the grid that would provide totally the power that they need.

The group from Lafayette's Louisiana Technical College Campus is one of eight nationwide competing against each other.

And so far they've been working nearly six months on not only the windmill project but a backup plan for renewable energy in the town.

Wind turbines are used on Louisiana's Coast - but this one would be the first inland energy creating windmill in the State.

And since this is the first competition of its kind as well Joseph and her teammate don't want to just stop there they're also looking at.

Installing solar panels on a canopy in the parking lot and checking how much energy can be generated like this.

The team plans on participating in the competition June twenty first through the twenty sixth in Kansas City Missouri. The winning team would take home the gold medal and recognition that could lead to grant funding for the school

Two students at the Louisiana Technical College in Lafayette are on a mission to find alternatives here in Acadiana to save energy and money. It's all part of a national sustainability competition where the teams must use bio-fuels, wind, and solar energy. They're focus, the Cajundome and the town of Washington. "So we found a spot in the town of Washington, we partnered with the mayor and other organizations and sponsors." said Kerri Joseph Kerri Joseph says after doing some research, they've decided to set up a wind turbine in the city of Washington. The solar instructor, Andy Hebert says there's a unique reason why the team picked the historic town. "The town is one of the oldest communities in the state, so when you talk about sustainability of an environment, this has been sustained for years. So they have a good base to start off with." said Andy Hebert A good base, Hebert says as far as how to understand the sustainability of a building, how to build a home to fit the environment, and make it energy efficient. The mayor of Washington says, he's on board, and anticipates a favorable outcome. "Anytime you can provide a service to a community that increases the amount of disposable income that each individual can have, it's always a benefit." said Joseph Pitre, Mayor of Washington "We'll be taking one of the oldest city in the state of Louisiana and jumping them ahead to being leaders in the whole state." said Sharon Huff One idea was instead of putting solar panels on the roof of the Cajundome, Solar panels would be mounted on poles. It would not only shade your vehicle, but significantly cut the Cajundome's 500,000 monthly power bill. "So you end up with this nice shaded parking lot which doesn't create a heat sync, because your taking the energy that's coming from the sun now and actually turning not into heat, but into energy. which is a benefit to everyone."
